At the risk of being subsumed by several larger, more powerful nations, the Bantu Confederacy's council under Tchaka IV, took a desperate move to avoid economic and social upheaval. Using the new AI technology purchased from the United States, and shutting down information exchange with the rest of the world, the B.C. formed the ultimate police state, based on the writings of George Orwell. Founded in 2089 C.E., the new Bantu Republic was able to finally control its internal problems. No longer could dissidents gain a foothold on popular opinion. No longer could the workforce slacken. Together with a highly effective propaganda movement, production increased (used almost solely for military purposes), and crime was nearly extinguished. Ethnic harmony was ensured by driving out non-Bantu peoples. Southern Africa was finally on the road to economic prosperity, but at what cost? Although personal freedom and even need was crushed, the Bantu Republic was to become one of the most long-lived of nations, lasting well through the Diamond Age.
