Called by many the most influential scientist in history, Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859 C.E. He had delayed publishing for many years because he feared an outburst from the religious community, and that is exactly what happened. Darwin's theory of Natural Selection was seen by many as a dethronement of God, even by Darwin himself. (He became an agnostic after formulating his theory.) Although scientists the world over saw the powerful proofs of his words, few others wanted to contemplate the idea of a world which did not require a god create humanity. Even as late as the early 21st century, clergy and less educated lay people were fighting the teaching of evolution in the public schools. With the aid of some minor revisions and the discovery of Genetics, The Origin of Species came to be considered as important to science as Newton's Principia, Einstein's General Relativity, or Ulanoski's Finally! A G.U.T. -- and just as sobering.
