Tropical grasslands are fertile, low-lying terrain found in the tropics. The presence of moist soil or sluggish water often creates a rich habitat for plants and wildlife, which become the spawning and feeding grounds for numerous animal species. The rich, moist soil provides conditions that are excellent for the creation of peat or for growing spices. In the past, this type of terrain was often destroyed by urban growth and farming before its value was recognized. Today, environmental regulations have been promulgated by many nations of the world in order to protect or restore the special ecosystems that are associated with tropical grasslands.
